Alphabet Avatars

Letter-based profile images with customizable colors—great when you want a polished look without relying on Gravatar.

Overview

Alphabet Avatars replaces the default WordPress avatar (Gravatar or mystery person) with letter-based initials. Each user gets a colored circle, rounded square, or square with their initials (e.g., John Smith → JS). Works in comments, author boxes, and the admin bar. Uses inline SVG—no external requests or privacy concerns. Fully configurable: choose where initials come from, colors, and shape.

Who is this for?
Site owners who want consistent, branded avatars without Gravatar; those who prefer privacy-friendly avatars; or anyone who wants a clean, modern look for comment and author displays.

Features

Letter-Based Initials
Avatars show 1–2 letters based on the source you choose. First+Last name, full name, username, or display name.
Configurable Letter Source
First+Last name (recommended): uses first name + last name (e.g., John Smith → JS). Full name: first letter of each word. Username or display name: first 2 characters.
Color Options
Random: each user gets a consistent color from a built-in palette. Custom: one color for all avatars. Pick any hex color.
Shape Options
Circle, rounded square, or square. Same shape for all avatars.
Letter Size
Small or regular—controls how large the initials appear inside the avatar.
No External Requests
Avatars are inline SVG. No Gravatar, no external images. Faster and privacy-friendly.
Works Everywhere
Comments, author boxes, admin bar, and anywhere WordPress shows avatars.

How It Works

1
Enable the Module
Go to WP PowerSuite, find Alphabet Avatars, and click the Enable button. A valid license is required (premium module).
2
Configure Settings
Choose letter source (how initials are generated), background (random or custom color), shape (circle, rounded, square), and letter size. A live preview shows your avatar with current settings.
3
Save
Settings save automatically. Avatars update everywhere: comments, author boxes, admin bar.
4
View the Result
Visit a post with comments, an author box, or the admin bar. Users without a custom avatar (e.g., from Local User Avatar) will see their initials.
Performance Note
Lightweight. Avatars are inline SVG—no image files, no external HTTP requests. Runs on the get_avatar filter. If you use Local User Avatar, that module runs first; users with a custom uploaded avatar keep it. Alphabet Avatars only applies when no other avatar is set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Troubleshooting

  • Avatars don't appear
Make sure the module is enabled and you have a valid license. Check that comments or author boxes use the standard get_avatar() function. Some themes or plugins may use custom avatar markup.
  • Wrong initials shown
Change the Letter source setting. First+Last requires users to have first and last name in their profile. Username or display name may work better if profiles are incomplete.
  • Avatar shows "?"
The user has no usable name data. First+Last and full name fall back to display name or username. If those are empty or contain no letters, "?" is shown.
  • Custom color doesn't apply
Ensure Background is set to "Custom color" and you've entered a valid hex color (e.g., #3498db). Save settings and refresh the page.
