Alphabet Avatars
Overview
Alphabet Avatars replaces the default WordPress avatar (Gravatar or mystery person) with letter-based initials. Each user gets a colored circle, rounded square, or square with their initials (e.g., John Smith → JS). Works in comments, author boxes, and the admin bar. Uses inline SVG—no external requests or privacy concerns. Fully configurable: choose where initials come from, colors, and shape.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this replace Gravatar?
Yes. When the module is enabled, users without a custom avatar (e.g., from Local User Avatar) get letter-based avatars instead of Gravatar or the mystery person icon.
What if a user has a custom avatar?
If you use the Local User Avatar module and a user has uploaded an image, that image is shown. Alphabet Avatars only applies when no other avatar is available.
Where do the initials come from?
You choose: First+Last name (from profile), full name (first letter of each word), username, or display name. First+Last is recommended for best results.
Can I use one color for everyone?
Yes. Set Background to “Custom color” and pick a hex color. All avatars will use that color.
Does it work with commenters who aren't logged in?
Alphabet Avatars works for registered users. Guest commenters may still see the default avatar unless another solution provides one.
Troubleshooting
- Avatars don't appearMake sure the module is enabled and you have a valid license. Check that comments or author boxes use the standard get_avatar() function. Some themes or plugins may use custom avatar markup.
- Wrong initials shownChange the Letter source setting. First+Last requires users to have first and last name in their profile. Username or display name may work better if profiles are incomplete.
- Avatar shows "?"The user has no usable name data. First+Last and full name fall back to display name or username. If those are empty or contain no letters, "?" is shown.
- Custom color doesn't applyEnsure Background is set to "Custom color" and you've entered a valid hex color (e.g., #3498db). Save settings and refresh the page.
