Custom Taxonomy Order

Drag and drop to reorder categories, tags, and custom taxonomy terms, then apply that order in widgets, menus, archives, and supported queries.

Overview

Give your WordPress categories and tags a deliberate order instead of relying only on the sequence returned by a particular term query. Custom Taxonomy Order adds drag-and-drop ordering and an order column to supported taxonomy list screens, then applies the saved sequence in the enabled frontend and widget contexts.

Category and tag ordering, including the supported frontend and widget controls, is available without a license. Pro controls add custom taxonomy support and optional application to archive, navigation-menu, and admin contexts. The module changes term order without changing term slugs, parent relationships, or the order of posts inside a category.

Extend the Workflow to Custom Classifications With Pro

Categories and tags provide the free starting point, but many WordPress projects use custom taxonomies to describe their content more precisely. A portfolio might use project disciplines, a resource library may organize audiences, or a directory may classify listing types. Pro support lets selected custom taxonomies use the same ordering workflow rather than requiring a separate manual solution for each classification system.
Custom Post Type Builder can define those taxonomies and connect them to the content types that use them. Custom Taxonomy Order then handles the sequence of eligible terms; it does not register the taxonomy itself or redesign the frontend list. Without a valid license, custom taxonomies are excluded from this module's runtime ordering, and the additional archive, menu, and admin application controls remain unavailable.

Keep Term Order Separate From Hierarchy and Post Order

Moving a category earlier in a list does not make it the parent of another category, and moving a tag does not change its slug. Custom Taxonomy Order leaves those structural properties alone. That separation is useful when the categories already classify content correctly and only their presentation sequence needs attention.
The posts inside a category are also separate records with their own query ordering. Reordering the category itself does not sort its articles into a new sequence. Custom Post Order provides the companion workflow for posts, pages, and licensed custom post types. Use term ordering for the classifications and post ordering for the content items, applying each only to the supported queries where that sequence is intended to matter.

Coordinate Ordering With Navigation and Other Plugins

The Pro menu-application option concerns supported taxonomy ordering in navigation contexts. It should not be treated as a general-purpose menu editor that rebuilds every custom link and parent-child item in a WordPress menu. Term ordering and menu construction remain different operations, even when a menu includes links to taxonomy content.
For a separate copy of an existing navigation structure, Duplicate Menu copies the menu and its item hierarchy. Custom Taxonomy Order instead controls term sequence in its supported contexts. The module also provides conflict notices for other ordering tools, helping administrators identify overlap. Choose which system should control the affected terms rather than expecting two independent ordering plugins to combine their priorities automatically.

Use Cases

  • Curated Category Lists
Arrange categories in a sequence that reflects how visitors should encounter the site's main topics.
  • Resource and Topic Widgets
Apply deliberate term ordering to supported widgets instead of relying on an unrelated default sequence.
  • Custom Classification Systems
Use Pro support to order eligible terms in taxonomies created for listings, projects, or resources.
  • Consistent Editorial Administration
Give authorized users drag-and-drop controls and a visible order column for supported term lists.
