Use Folder Organization Without Breaking Media Links
Moving files into physical directories can affect references that depend on their original location. Categorize Media avoids that problem by storing folder relationships inside WordPress rather than relocating the uploaded files. An image assigned to a different folder keeps the same file path and URL, so the organization does not itself require updating published content.
This is different from Media Rename Manager, which changes filenames and updates supported references. Use Categorize Media to make a library easier to browse, and use a renaming workflow only when the filenames themselves need attention. Keeping these jobs separate lets a team reorganize assets without turning a simple folder cleanup into a URL migration.
Organize Existing Attachments Without Repetitive Editing
A useful folder system needs to work for media already in the library, not just future uploads. Categorize Media supports drag-and-drop assignment and bulk actions so editors can group existing attachments without opening each file's edit screen. Folder creation, renaming, deletion, and ordering are available through the sidebar workflow, while Unassigned provides a focused view of assets that still need organization.
The distinction between removing a folder assignment and deleting an attachment is important. The provided bulk action removes media from a folder; it is not a media-file cleanup action. Unused Media Finder addresses a separate question by identifying attachments that appear unused within its supported scan coverage. A file being unassigned here does not mean it is unused or safe to delete.
Keep Both Grid and List Workflows Useful
Some editors recognize files visually and prefer the Media Library grid. Others need the additional information and row-based actions available in list mode. Categorize Media supports both approaches: the sidebar filters the grid, while list mode includes a folder column and dropdown filter so organization remains visible in the interface the editor prefers.
The grid selection is retained through a short-lived folder-filter cookie, and choosing All Media clears it so an old filter does not keep hiding the rest of the library. Sidebar visibility and width are also adjustable. These controls let the folder structure fit the existing administration workflow rather than forcing everyone into a separate media-management page.
Give New Uploads a Consistent Starting Point
Organizing an existing library is only part of the job. New attachments can quickly become another unsorted collection unless the team has a simple default. Categorize Media can automatically assign new attachments to a chosen folder, or leave the default unset when editors should decide where each upload belongs.
Folder management and media assignment use separate WordPress permissions. Users who can manage categories manage the folder structure, while upload permission governs assignment. This lets a site distinguish between maintaining the organizational system and using it during routine media work. The module does not grant upload access to users who would not otherwise have it.
Use Organized Folders in Media Export Workflows
When a project needs an archive of related assets, folder-based organization can be more useful than exporting a month of uploads. Download Media Library can use the supported Categorize Media folder taxonomy to export attachments from a selected folder, with an option to include child folders. This provides a practical connection between everyday organization and a later handover or archive task.
The folders themselves are not public archives and are not exposed as a public REST taxonomy. They exist to organize attachments in wp-admin, and the module requires an active WP PowerSuite license to run. Use the folder tree as an internal library structure rather than expecting it to create frontend galleries, change file permissions, or move assets into matching server directories.
