Unused Media Finder

Find media files not used anywhere on your site and delete them to reclaim storage space. Clean up orphaned images from deleted posts, old test uploads, and imported content.

Overview

Unused Media Finder scans the WordPress Media Library for attachments that do not appear to be referenced by supported content signals, helping administrators identify files that may no longer be needed.

The scanner checks featured-image relationships and common media references in public post content, including classic galleries, Gutenberg image-related blocks, wp-image classes, and uploads URLs. Potentially unused attachments are shown with preview, size, MIME type, and deletion controls so you can review them before making a decision.

Because WordPress media can be referenced from many places outside normal post content, results are intentionally presented as candidates rather than guaranteed-unused files. Unused Media Finder is a Pro module in WP PowerSuite.

Find Media That May No Longer Be Used

  • WordPress sites accumulate media quickly. Editors replace images, old posts are removed, landing pages are rebuilt, duplicate files are uploaded, and temporary campaign assets remain in the library long after the content that used them has disappeared.
  • Unused Media Finder provides a structured way to investigate that accumulation. Instead of scanning only the filesystem, it starts with WordPress attachment records and looks for supported evidence that each attachment is still referenced by content. Files without those signals become candidates for review.

Check Common WordPress Media References

  • Featured images are marked as used immediately through the _thumbnail_id relationship. WP PowerSuite then walks eligible public post content and searches for common signals such as wp-image-ID classes, classic gallery shortcode IDs, Gutenberg image-related block IDs, and uploads-directory URLs that can be resolved back to attachments.
  • This covers many ordinary WordPress publishing patterns and is particularly useful for posts and pages built with core media blocks or classic editor content. The scan works in batches so a large site can progress through content and attachments without relying on one unusually long PHP request.

Treat Results as Candidates, Not Absolute Truth

  • WordPress does not have one universal database field that says whether an attachment is used. Themes and plugins can reference media through options, serialized settings, custom fields, widgets, menus, taxonomy metadata, user metadata, page-builder storage, ecommerce galleries, CSS, or custom code.

Review File Size Before Deleting

  • Each candidate includes useful context such as attachment title, preview or MIME icon, URL, individual file size, and MIME type. The result summary also shows the number of potential unused files and their total size.

This makes cleanup more intentional: understand the scale of the storage issue, scan for possible unused media, then manually review the candidates with the largest potential impact.

Permanent Deletion Requires Extra Care

  • Deleting an attachment through Unused Media Finder uses WordPress permanent attachment deletion. The attachment row, original file, and associated generated thumbnails are removed rather than moved to a reversible media trash.
  • WP PowerSuite restricts deletion to IDs contained in the active scan's unused list and requires the appropriate upload and deletion capabilities. Single, selected, and Delete All actions display confirmations, with stronger warning language for broad deletion.
Before deleting a large group of media, maintaining a current Backup & Restore snapshot is the safer workflow. A media scan can reduce risk, but it cannot make a destructive delete reversible on its own.

Know the Current Bulk Deletion Limit

  • The server accepts a maximum of 50 attachment IDs in one delete request. Individual and smaller selected deletions fit naturally within that limit.
  • For a result set larger than 50, the current Delete All interface can exceed the server-side limit because it submits the full list at once. Large cleanups should therefore be handled in smaller reviewed groups rather than assuming one Delete All action is appropriate for hundreds of attachments.
  • This is another reason to treat the module as a review and cleanup assistant rather than an unattended media eraser.
