Enable AVIF Upload

Allow AVIF image uploads in the Media Library. Requires GD or Imagick with AVIF support on the server.

Overview

Adds AVIF (image/avif) as an allowed upload type, validates AVIF file headers on classic and REST uploads, and improves Media Library preview handling. Intermediate WordPress sizes are not generated for AVIF uploads. A status panel shows whether the server is ready (GD/Imagick AVIF support) so you know before editors try to upload.

Who is this for?
  • Sites adopting modern AVIF assets from designers or CDNs
  • Teams whose hosts already support AVIF decoding
  • Anyone who needs WordPress to accept .avif without a custom snippet

Features

Allow AVIF uploads
Adds AVIF to WordPress allowed mime types.
Header validation
Checks AVIF file structure on upload (classic and REST).
Library preview support
Helps the Media Library show AVIF previews where possible.
Server readiness status

No AVIF intermediates

Use Cases

  • Design handoff in AVIF
Designers deliver AVIF exports—editors can upload them directly once the server is ready.
  • Modern performance stacks
Sites already using AVIF on the CDN still need WordPress to accept the mime type in the library.
  • Staging capability checks
Use the Ready / Not ready status to confirm hosting support before enabling AVIF in production workflows.
