Enable AVIF Upload

Overview

AVIF Upload lets WordPress users with normal media permissions upload native .avif image files through the Media Library, Block Editor, and supported REST media workflows when the server can handle AVIF.

Instead of converting JPEG or PNG files, this module focuses on accepting images that are already encoded as AVIF. It adds the required MIME handling, corrects WordPress filetype detection, validates the uploaded file header so a renamed non-AVIF file is rejected, and improves Media Library preview behavior without pretending the server can reliably generate AVIF thumbnails.

Upload AVIF Files Directly Into WordPress

  • AVIF is a modern image format designed to deliver strong compression while maintaining useful visual quality, but being able to display an AVIF image in a browser does not automatically mean every WordPress server can safely accept and process the format. WordPress upload behavior depends on the version of WordPress, MIME detection, and the image libraries available on the host.
  • AVIF Upload provides a focused compatibility layer for sites that already receive AVIF assets. Once enabled on a server with AVIF-capable GD or Imagick, WP PowerSuite allows eligible users to upload the files through familiar WordPress media workflows instead of converting them back to JPEG or PNG merely to get them into the Media Library.
  • The module deliberately stays narrow in scope. It does not try to optimize, recompress, or recreate the AVIF image. The incoming file is assumed to be the asset you intend to store, while WP PowerSuite concentrates on validating it and making WordPress recognize it correctly.

Validate the File, Not Just the Extension

  • A filename ending in .avif is not proof that the bytes inside the file represent an AVIF image. Accepting a file solely because someone renamed photo.jpg to photo.avif would weaken the value of MIME restrictions and could leave misleading attachments in the Media Library.
  • WP PowerSuite checks the beginning of the uploaded file for the ISO base media file structure used by AVIF. The expected ftyp marker must be present at the correct location and the file must advertise an AVIF-compatible brand such as avif or avis. If that signature is missing, the upload is rejected rather than being forced into WordPress as image/avif.
  • The validation is applied to classic Media Library and AJAX uploads as well as REST media uploads, giving the same file-level rule to multiple WordPress entry points.

Respect What the Server Can Actually Handle

  • Native AVIF uploads are useful only when the hosting environment has enough image support to work with them. WP PowerSuite checks whether PHP GD exposes imageavif() or Imagick reports AVIF support before it registers the AVIF upload hooks.

  • AVIF Upload and AVIF Conversion solve two different media problems. AVIF Upload is for files that are already encoded as AVIF before they reach WordPress. It does not have quality controls, compression presets, background conversion, or frontend picture delivery because no conversion is happening.
If your normal workflow starts with JPEG or PNG and you want WordPress to create AVIF automatically, use AVIF Conversion instead. Why WordPress Thumbnail Generation Is Suppressed for Native AVIF

  • WordPress normally generates several intermediate image sizes after an upload. That process relies on the server image editor being able to decode the source, resize it, and write each destination format consistently. AVIF support for those operations can vary between environments even when a basic AVIF capability check succeeds.
  • To avoid leaving a Media Library with partially generated or unreliable derivatives, AVIF Upload suppresses intermediate image-size generation for native AVIF attachments. The original AVIF is retained and a full-size entry is supplied to the Media Library when WordPress would otherwise omit a usable preview size.
  • This is an intentional compatibility choice rather than an optimization feature. If your project requires a complete set of responsive derivatives from conventional source files, AVIF Conversion provides a different workflow by starting with JPEG or PNG and generating AVIF alongside WordPress sizes.

Use AVIF Upload in a Broader Media Workflow

AVIF Upload is most useful when modern images are prepared before they reach WordPress. A designer may export AVIF from an image tool, a build pipeline may optimize assets automatically, or a headless application may upload media through the REST API.
