WebP Conversion

Automatically convert uploaded JPEG and PNG images to WebP format for significantly smaller file sizes and faster page loads. Cannot be enabled together with AVIF Conversion.

Overview

WebP Conversion converts eligible new JPEG and PNG uploads into WebP and makes the WebP file the actual WordPress attachment.

Unlike a sidecar delivery system, the module updates the attachment path, GUID, and MIME type so WordPress itself points to the .webp file after conversion. You can control JPEG and PNG conversion independently, choose WebP quality, keep the original JPEG/PNG in an originals folder or delete it, and restore converted attachments later when a retained source is available.

WebP Conversion is a Pro module in WP PowerSuite and should not be enabled at the same time as AVIF Conversion.

Make WebP the WordPress Attachment Itself

  • WebP Conversion uses a direct replacement model. When an eligible JPEG or PNG is uploaded and conversion succeeds, WP PowerSuite updates the attachment so the main stored file becomes .webp and the attachment MIME type becomes image/webp.
This means wp_get_attachment_url() naturally returns the WebP URL after conversion. There is no separate <picture> wrapper and no need for the frontend to choose between a WebP sidecar and the original file. The Media Library itself now points at WebP as the canonical source.

Convert JPEG and PNG With a Predictable Quality Setting

  • JPEG and PNG conversion can be controlled independently, allowing a site to convert both formats or limit WebP processing to one source type. Quality is configurable from 60 to 100, with 80 as the default balance between visual fidelity and compression.
  • WP PowerSuite uses GD imagewebp() when available and falls back to Imagick when the server reports WebP format support. PNG transparency is preserved through the GD path by converting palette images to true color and saving alpha information.
  • The module does not call an external binary or send images to an outside optimization service. Conversion happens using the image-processing capabilities available on the WordPress host.

Keep Originals When You Want a Recovery Path

  • Converting the attachment changes the file WordPress considers canonical, so a rollback strategy matters. With Keep Originals, WP PowerSuite moves the JPEG or PNG source into an originals directory beside the converted attachment before completing the workflow.
  • If the source backup remains available, the Restore process can remove the WebP file, move the original back, restore the attachment path, GUID, and MIME type, and regenerate WordPress image metadata while WebP conversion is temporarily suppressed.
  • If originals were configured to be deleted, the module cannot reconstruct the previous JPEG or PNG later. The choice between Keep and Delete should therefore reflect the site's storage budget and rollback requirements.

Know What Happens to WordPress Thumbnail Sizes

  • WebP Conversion changes the main attachment file, but the intermediate sizes generated during the same WordPress metadata request remain in their original JPEG or PNG formats unless another part of the stack converts them.
  • This is an important architectural detail. The module is not a complete every-thumbnail WebP sidecar system; it focuses on the canonical attachment original. Themes may still request intermediate-size URLs that point to JPEG or PNG derivatives.
If your workflow depends heavily on controlling which thumbnail sizes exist, Custom Image Sizes, Disable Thumbnail Generation, and Regenerate Thumbnails provide separate controls for registration, generation policy, and rebuilding existing media.

Skip Images That Should Not Be Converted

  • WP PowerSuite checks several conditions before replacing an attachment. The server must be able to encode WebP, the source must be an eligible JPEG or PNG, the file must live inside the uploads directory, and conversion must not be suppressed by a restore or developer filter.
  • An exclusion suffix can be used to leave specially named files alone, and a pixel-count safety limit prevents extremely large dimensions from entering the normal synchronous conversion path. If the server cannot encode WebP, administrators receive a warning on relevant WP PowerSuite and Media screens instead of assuming the feature is working.

Choose WebP Conversion or AVIF Conversion

WebP Conversion and AVIF Conversion are intentionally marked as conflicting modules because they represent different upload strategies and should not both try to transform the same attachment.
WebP Conversion replaces the main attachment with WebP and does not provide a picture-tag sidecar system. AVIF Conversion defaults to keeping the JPEG/PNG attachment, generating AVIF sidecars for the full image and generated sizes, and serving those sidecars through markup. AVIF Conversion can also use an optional replacement mode when required.
Choose based on the format you prefer, your server encoding support, browser compatibility requirements, and whether you want the optimized format to be the Media Library attachment or an alternate frontend source.
